Tampico American Legion Post #574 held its annual Veterans Day celebration last week as about a dozen members participated in a brief and dignified salute to their comrades.
As the ceremony wrapped up, Post Commander John Taets asked the participants to gather back at the legion’s meeting room in the basement of the Reagan Community Center.
As the members settled into their socially distanced seats, Taets announced that he had a special honor for the members who had served during the Vietnam War, which was the majority of those gathered.
The post, like many, are shrinking in numbers with Taets trying to keep members interested and active. He has had some recent success adding two new members and a third set to join after the beginning of the new year.
Taets, an Army Veteran and the post commander for forty-seven years said he had worked in conjunction with Beverly Larson of the Princeton, Illinois DAR Chapter (Daughters of the American Revolution) to gather a special commendation for the Vietnam Vets.
The honor was given in recognition of the end of the war in 1975.
