Sauk Valley Community College is expanding community education programs this summer to include Sports Officiating 101. The class is open to ages 15 and up, and begins on June 19.

Through Sports Officiating 101 individuals will learn how to umpire for youth levels of softball and/or baseball. Training includes field work, guest speakers, and observation assignments in conjunction with in class and online assessments. After completion of the class, students will be prepared to sit for the IHSA softball and/or baseball umpire exam. Thomas Nance, of Prophetstown, an IHSA official for over 30 years, will instruct the class and prepare students for a fulfilling part-time job of working with young athletes on local ball diamonds.

The class will meet in the evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays for 16 sessions beginning June 19 and ending August 16. Classes will be held in SVCC’s room 2C10.

Sports Officiating 101 is open to ages 15 and up. Cost of the class is $89 per person.
