The final stretch of Prophetstown Main Street sidewalk to be upgraded is showing progress. The work was scheduled to begin several weeks ago, but as with so many other projects, rain has delayed the work.
Last week Law Construction from Mt Carroll began to make major progress on the project which runs between Third Street and the Riverside Motel. The work is a bit more challenging than other parts of the street due to its elevation.
A piece of history will be lost with the project as several coal cellars located under the sidewalk will be filled in. The cellars measuring about 20x5x4 were used to hold coal used to heat the buildings before the advent of fuel oil.
The new sidewalk will have two levels including ramps and railings and should be completed by the end of the month.
