A close game throughout led to overtime at Erie on Tuesday night with the Panthers outscoring Monmouth-Roseville in the extra period 8-6 to pick up a TRAC win 44-42 avenging a 27 point loss to the Titans in early January. The win moves the Panthers to 6-12 (2-5) for the season with Orion coming to town on Friday.
EP got off to a great offensive start as six different Panthers got in the scoring column to put the home team up 16-10 after one quarter.
Monmouth-Roseville worked their way back into the contest holding the Panthers to just 7 second quarter points and closing the gap to 23-20 at the half.
The Panther’s offensive woes continued in the third period as they only generated 6 points with M-R adding 11 to put them up 31-29 heading into the final quarter.
Trailing 36-33 with just under a minute remaining, Michael Collins wrestled away an offensive rebound for a put back and 1. He converted the foul shot to tie the contest at 36. M-R held the ball calling a timeout with ten seconds remaining to setup a final play.
The Panther defense forced a traveling call with three seconds left getting a chance for a final shot. Going the length of the floor the Panther’s Jeremiah Kochevar got off a long heave that missed the mark and sent the game to overtime.
The Panthers scored first in OT as freshman, Connor Keegan hit a three-ball from the corner on an out of bounds play to put EP up 39-36 with 2:30 left. A nice inside the paint pass from Caleb Naftzger to Michael Collins put the Panthers up 5 with just under two minutes remaining. A short jumper in the lane put M-R back within 3 with just over a minute left.
A blocking foul sent Nafzger to the line for two shots to extend the lead but he split the pair. The usually strong free throw shooting Panthers could not find the mark in overtime as they went 3/10 in the period and a dismal 5/21 on the night. The missed opportunities loomed large in the final minute of the extra frame.
After trading free throws with EP up 44-39 with twenty-eight seconds left, an M-R free throw made it a three point contest. A pair of missed free throws by Noah Wiseley and a three-ball by M-R’s Nick Bresnahan gave the Panthers a slim 2 point lead with 12.1 seconds left. EP once again missed a chance to ice the game at the line as Kochevar missed a pair of free tosses to give M-R life with 8 seconds to go. A steal by Kochevar and a foul gave him a chance at redemption with 2 ticks on the clock, but again he could not find the bottom of the net. Despite the second miss he out hustled the Titans to gather in his own rebound as the clock expired giving EP the win.
Nosh Wiseley led EP scoring 11 with Michael Collins adding 10 and Caleb Naftzger hitting 9. Bresnahan led the Titans with 10.
The F/S Panthers picked up a win 41-38.
