The EP Panthers turned a close game into a romp on Saturday in Erie as they defeated Clifton Central 56-20 in the first round of the IHSA football Playoffs.
EP got out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before the Comets responded with a lengthy drive to make it a 21-6 contest at the half.
The Panthers stumbled out of the gate in the second half fumbling on their second play from scrimmage with the Comets cashing in on a short field to close the gap to 21-14.
EP responded with a sustained drive to go back up by 14 but the Comets answered with a 66-yard bomb to make it a 28-20 contest after three quarters.
The fourth quarter was all Panthers as they scored on each of their possessions and capped the game off with a 99-yard pick-6 by junior Jase Grunder.
In the video, Coach Jesse Abbott talks about the team’s effort and their ability to bounce back each time Clifton scored. Running back Mason Misfeldt describes a touchdown which involved a catch, a fumble, a scoop, and a score.
The Panthers will travel to Kankakee on Saturday to take on Bishop McNamara.
