Owners Don and Jackie Jevne celebrated the 50th year of the family-owned business with refreshments, giveaways, a display of photos and documents, and a ribbon-cutting with Morrison Chamber of Commerce members and Mayor Scott Vandermyde.

Thursday’s anniversary celebration included store specials, a fire pit raffle, and ‘spin to win’ prizes such as tools, tumblers, or hats. Tea, lemonade, and slices of cake baked by the Bread Lady were offered as refreshments.

Morrison True Value Hardware first opened for business at 130 E. Main Street on June 11, 1974. James and Emily Jevne bought the business for $77,473 and expanded it in 1979 by purchasing the building next door. They stocked the space with household items, lawn and garden, plumbing, fishing gear, toys and games, and more. The storefront in the former “Morrison Old Hotel” would be a Main Street staple for 38 years.

Don started working for his parents in 1974, although it was only supposed to be temporary. After graduating from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, he started teaching in Scales Mound, IL. He returned home one summer to help his dad but after learning the ropes, decided to stay and eventually took ownership of the business.

Don relocated the store its current location at 104 S. Genesee St. in October 2012. The downtown location lacked the space for further expansion, so the Jevnes purchased the empty building that formerly housed Blackhawk Lumber, which has since provided ample space for all their needs and inventory.

After Thursday’s ribbon-cutting, Chamber Director Callie Hamstra thanked the Jevnes for “50 years of service and being open. We’re thankful for all the hard work Don has put into this business, and Morrison, and we’re excited to celebrate this accomplishment with you!” She presented him with a ‘50 Years’ photo collage print.

Don thanked his family, staff, and the people of Morrison for supporting True Value over the years. He was called the “best boss ever” and “best husband ever” by the ladies by his side, before everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to his wife Jackie as she celebrated that milestone too.

Besides running a successful business that currently employs seven people, Don is also an active member of the Morrison Rotary Club and supports local events and organizations.

Store hours are 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays.
