“Light Up The Park” Returning

One of the many displays that filled the Prophetstown State Park last December for the first ever "Light Up the Park" event.

After the cancellation of Prophetstown’s Lighted Christmas Parade in 2020 a small group of volunteers decided the town still needed an event to celebrate the holiday season. After many discussions with local entities “Light Up the Park” was born.

The idea was to create a drive-thru event that allowed local organizations, businesses, and individuals to share season greetings with the public without a parade. The Prophetstown State Park with its looped drive served as the ideal spot for vehicles filled with wide eyed yougsters, and oldsters to take in the creative displays that filled the park.

A line of cars snake their way into the Prophetstown State Park last December.

After a successful debut Prophetstown Police Chief Bruce Franks and his department decided to take on the event with support of Prophetstown Fire, Ambulance Service and First Responders and continue to make it a part of Prophetstown’s holiday celebration.

With the return of the lighted parade Franks is hoping parade entrants will share their works of art with the public for a few more weeks by displaying them in the park.

Santa will make occasional visits to the park depending on his busy schedule.

Another treat for visitors to the event will be Thicksten’s Popcorn, which will be open Friday and Saturday nights from 6-8 pm.

LUP will open on Friday, December 3rd and run Friday-Sunday during the first three weekends of December from 5-8 pm. The display will also be open on Christmas Eve. Donations will be accepted.
