High School Shooting Team Takes 6th At State Competition (photos)

The Prophetstown High School Clay Target team participated in the state tournament held in Bunker Hill, Illinois on Saturday, June 5 and came home with several awards and high finishes.

The tournament was open to any of the fifty-seven registered teams in the state. Participants competed in three skill levels, Varsity, JV, and Novice with male and female categories in each. The top three team scores were also awarded at each level.

The Prophets had twenty-seven team members participate made up students from both Erie and Prophetstown High Schools. The team was lead by head coach Gabe Olinger and assistants Darryl Drennen and Barney Olinger. Additional volunteer helpers included Mike Drennen, Tad and Stephanie Skromme, and Nichole Olinger.

The athletes shoot four rounds with twenty-five targets in each round. The top five scores from the team, regardless of skill group, make up the overall team score.

Gabe Olinger said he was very please with the team and individual results saying, “This is the best depth we have ever had.”

The overall team score was 473/500, which earned them 6th place out of twenty-eight teams. All individual scores are based on 100 targets. The top five scorers for the Prophets were: Frank Drennen – 97, Brody Naftzger – 95, Kyle Skromme – 94, Dawson Christensen – 94, Gunnar Wuebben – 93.

The JV squad took 2nd as a team with a team total of 418/500. The top five scorers were: Sabrina Soleta – 91, Evan Wetzell – 86, Braiden Brooks – 81, Reece Duncan – 81, Jacob Finley – 79.

Sabrina Soleta took 1st out of twenty-five shooters in the JV Female division scoring a 91. She also tied for 3rd overall in the JV competition out of 141 participants.

Other top JV Female finishers: Haley Shafer tied for 6th with teammate Mysti Moody each scoring 75.

Novice Male: Clayton Gerlach tied for 8th with 70.

Novice Female: Jaelin Hawkins tied for 7th – 67, Avery Olinger 10th – 66, Addi Wiersema 11th – 64.

JV Male: Evan Wetzell 15th/116 shooters – 86.

Varsity Male: Frank Drennen tied 13th/188 shooters – 98.
