Tampico Elementary School Physical Education Teacher, Karen Miles put away her P.E. whistle for the final time last Friday and called it a teaching career.

Miles was a substitute teacher for nine years before becoming a full-time instructor for twenty-three years, all in the PLT#3 District.

She taught middle school for five years, a combination of K-8 for a few years, and then exclusively elementary level after the PLT Middle School moved to Prophetstown. While the grade levels she taught varied, the location was always Tampico.

For over a dozen years, one of the last days of school in Tampico have been “Field Day” with students playing a variety of outdoor games, enjoying treats and usually getting wet.

Last week the weather cooperated perfectly as Miles led her students through the annual tradition with the help of staff and volunteers. The K-3rd graders participated in the morning session with the 4th and 5th graders playing in the afternoon.

Miles was toasted by the staff and a surprise visit from the “Yak Yak Sisters”, the kayaking club she formed with friends almost a decade ago.

Miles says she plans on traveling but will be subbing in the district next year and continue her middle school track coaching duties.
